When is enough bloody fighting games enough? Well, we aren’t there yet because Mortal Kombat is back and just as bloody and lore confusing as ever. With the latest reveal of classic (or Klassic if you’re a nerd like myself) character Jade, I figured it would be a good time to check in and see who all will be on the latest MK roster and how they all fit in with the story.
In a surprising turn of events, MK X was not nearly as brutal in terms of killing story characters as its predecessor Mortal Kombat (Technically the 9th game in the series). Probably because it forced the devs to change up the roster for the next game and quite a few characters are returning in MK11. Scorpion and Sub-Zero were virtually guaranteed to return they brought along some classic and some newer characters that managed to survive this long including Sonya Blade, Johnny, and Cassie Cage, D’Vorah, Kano and of course, Raiden. Now what might come as a shock is some of the characters that appeared to have died in the story that are coming back like Kabal, Baraka, Jade, and Liu Kang. While the return of the last two has been explained our sword-wielding and gas mask wearing merc and sword for arms Outworld minion are still a mystery, as well as the return of former DLC character Skarlet who is just another mystery to be revealed. Shao Kahn will also join the roster as a DLC fighter that is currently only announced as a preorder bonus but will assumingly be available for purchase after the game releases.
So far there have been two brand new characters added to the roster which is the time and earth bending Geras and his mysterious boss Kronika who appears to be some sort of ruler over time and has finally had enough. For the uninitiated, the reason that the 9th game is just called Mortal Kombat is that it is seen as a sort of soft reboot of the franchise. At the end of MK: Annihilation Shao Kahn claims the title of “Supreme Ruler of All Realms”, definitely no ego involved there, but as he prepares to take the killing blow Raiden sends a message back in time to himself at the original Mortal Kombat tournament to prevent this future from ever happening. So you see how the lore gets sor
of iffy? This disruption of the timeline appears to have upset a few people, namely that ruler of time I mentioned earlier and she appears to want to fix “the balance of the universe” which sounds appropriately ominous for a villain. And I get the feeling her plan involves beating the hell out of a couple of poor Earthrelmers. This latest addition to the Mortal Kombat series drops April 23rd and NetherRealm studios has promised to roll out more character reveals until then.
