5 Tips for Yoshi’s Crafted World

Yoshi’s Crafted World has released to rave reviews at the surprise of absolutely no one that’s been paying attention to Nintendo’s recent track record with their smash-hit console, the Switch. Its varied levels, superb art direction, and layers of content make it an incredibly enjoyable experience for Switch owners of all ages, and we certainly recommend you pick it up if you haven’t already. While it’s not the hardest game in the world, those who haven’t played a game in the Yoshi series before this release might be feeling lost. With that being said, here are our top five tips to help you get the most out of your time in Crafted World.

1. Grab a Friend

Two Yoshis are better than one.

That’s right, Yoshi’s Crafted World features co-op play! While unfortunately online multiplayer is not available, your friend on the couch can drop in and out as they please. Co-op play has a number of benefits, namely that if one of your Yoshis happens to die, the other one can continue through the level. Two Yoshis also means more eggs, which in turn means more opportunities to obtain collectibles. Plus, let’s face it: every game is more fun with friends, and Crafted World is no exception. Your Switch came with two controllers – use ’em!

2. Go Off the Beaten Path

Anyone who’s played a Yoshi game before will tell you that these games reward the curious player. There are often multiple paths through a level, offering players different collectibles and rewards and breaking up the gameplay. Levels that may appear simple at first might reveal themselves to be much broader than expected. Don’t be afraid to break off from the main trail – most likely, it’ll benefit you.

3. Don’t Hesitate to Repeat Levels

Unless you’re making an active effort from the outset, chances are you’ll miss a few of the games many collectibles during your first playthrough. Repeating levels is part of Crafted World’s design philosophy, however. This is demonstrated by the fact that after the completion of each level, a new version of the level is unlocked, flipping the camera 180 degrees and sending Yoshi running through in the opposite direction. The Yoshi series has a long history of rewarding repeated playthroughs, and Crafted World is no exception.

4. Purchase and Equip a Costume

Besides the obvious fact that they make your Yoshi stylish as hell, costumes provide a significant benefit by increasing the amount of damage you can take before dying. Costumes are purchased using the game’s coins, which you should have no problem obtaining on your travels. Costumes that cost more provide you with more hit points as you might expect, and you’ll be able to unlock them after you find your first gachapon machine. The gachapon machine will never give you a costume you already own, and your outfits will never permanently break, so don’t be afraid to spend those coins!

5. If All Else Fails, Mellow Mode

You know Yoshi keeps that thang on him.

Maybe your little sibling wants their turn, and the level you’re on is a bit too tough. Perhaps this is your child’s first video game. Or maybe you’re just having a really, really unlucky day. No shame here. Whatever the case may be, Mellow Mode is available to help make your gaming experience a lot less stressful. Mellow Mode gives you unlimited flutter jumps and increases the amount of damage you can take before dying. It also makes it a whole lot easier to find collectibles, so if you’re struggling to reach 100% completion, consider switching this on. Mellow Mode can be toggled on and off at any time, so use it as much or as little as you wish.
