Money talks and in Dave the Diver it might literally walk in this mash-up of every kind of adventure and action mechanic thrown into one. Dave the Diver is so much fun, but you’ll need to do a lot of grinding across everything from a Farmville-esq farm to your own hatchery. To fuel it all you’ll need gold above the surface and Bei below the surface.
This guide may contain mild spoilers on later game mechanics.
Farming Gold in Dave the Diver
Gold is obtained through three methods: sushi sales, quests and selling fish and items. The first is going to be your biggest revenue driver and fund your expeditions the most. The second, questing, is going to help get you to the next quest a bit faster and get you some much needed upgrades. The last is reserved for the lower tier fish and any items that are meant to be sold.
Quests are going to come no matter what so that’s not farmable. You could in theory farm fish to sell for gold, but that won’t get you nearly the revenue you need.
You have to be a successful sushi restaurant manager and to do that you simply need to follow these rules:
- Always sort by price and only sell your highest earning fish.
- Upgrading the sushi can have diminishing returns.
- Vegetable sushi is the best reward. You can get it past$1000 a plate, 5 plates, for only about $100 in gold. That’s $5000 for $100. Vegetable sushi is a mainstay through the middle game.
- Generally, it’s best to save the legendary boss food for a special themed night.
- Themed nights are great, kinda? If you have the fish and the dishes you get double the income. Otherwise, it’s just a waste.
- Buying vegetables increases your cost.
- Going to platinum will increase your costs.
- Hire staff just to dispatch them for ingredients. You get them ingredients for free.
Best Recipes and Staff
As mentioned previously, vegetable sushi is the clear return on investment winner. You can farm all the materials and not even have to visit the sea, which means you can stock your fish up for upgrades. It can sell for 1000 gold a plate. It’s very nice.
For staff, you probably need Raptor and El Nino. That covers cocktails, drinks, wasabi and cleaning. That means your bar will be fully automated. No other staff really matters because mid-game you’re not going to manage getting anything to anyone yourself. Dave is a diver, after all.
Farming Bei in Dave the Diver
Towards the end of the first section of the game you’ll unlock an undersea town. In this town you’ll use a currency called Bei. You won’t be able to spend it directly at the start on anything other than a Beluga to move faster (which is not really worth it…). Every quest you complete will give you some Bei and a gambling casino will open early on that lets you bet upwards to 100 Bei (for a 200 Bei reward) on three mini-games.
Later in the game, Bei will be used to upgrade weapons and grow seaweed. Each new seaweed column is 300 Bei and a lot of weapon upgrade items are 200~300 Bei each. That actually makes the gambling route a bit more painful, considering you only earn 100 Bei each time and each game can take a bit.
My suggestion is to avoid the gambling route and just play through the story to farm all the Bei you need. The main story assigns a lot of Bei and there’s some delivery sidequests you can do if you have extra materials that generally focus on creatures right outside the door. Your oxygen refills every time you visit the town too, so it makes it an easy way to farm Bei actively.
To save yourself from farming too much Bei, I’d also suggest avoiding holding off on upgrading the seaweed farm. You need seeds, which cost Bei and if you upgrade it too quickly you won’t have the cash for the seeds and plenty more days ahead where you’ll have a huge seaweed farm and nothing to grow on it.
You can sell materials to the undersea workshop too to get Bei rather instantly. That’s the best way to just outright farm it. I never had to do that in my entire playthrough though! That may be more for later in the game or if you really just want a lot of seaweed fast.
