In Dave the Diver you will unlock three different kinds of farms: vegetable, fish and seaweed. You’ll unlock them directly in that order. The game does a fantastic job of going over the basics of each farm, but you may be wanting to know what’s coming up or how to deal with specific mechanics. That’s where our guide comes in. We’ll go into unlocking them and how to efficiently run them.
In order to avoid spoiling the game, we will not call any specific character out by name or story.
We now also have a video guide on YouTube!
The first farm is going to be unlocked by a loud-mouthed guest who visits your sushi restaurant fairly on. They’re going to ask for curry and you have to deliver that dish to them yourself. So not only does it have to be on the menu, but Dave has to carry the dish over. You have an unlimited amount of time, but as long as that guest wants the dish, they will occupy one seat.
After this event occurs, you’ll unlock the vegetable farm which will only allow you to grow rice at first, but over the next few days will expand to vegetables. The left side will only grow one type of rice, which is “rice.” Wheat is grown on the right side when the vegetable farm unlocks.
The fish farm will unlock automatically following the farm as you advance in the story.
The seaweed farm is unlocked by preparing a meal for the seaweed rancher and following a short side quest from them. This is in the underwater village. Visiting the seaweed farm will consume your daily dive.
Eggs are unlocked by a VIP visitor that will automatically come after the farm quest.
The rice and vegetable farm are really good sources of income, especially for vegetable sushi. You’ve got three main mechanics. The rice patty where rice is grown, which only grows white rice. This rice is automatically grown, you only have to clear the weeds each day.
The vegetable farm will let you grow vegetables from seeds bought from the farmer. There’s four plots to unlock, but I’d focus instead on the sprinkler upgrade which comes a bit later in the story but stops you from needing to water the vegetables. The vegetables will grow weeds which you’ll need to remove.
At some point later in the story you’ll unlock eggs. Each chicken will give you a chance at one type of egg. The eggs actually aren’t interchangeable so you’ll need both types!
The farmer will eventually begin just selling the vegetables outright as well later in the game if you don’t want to bother farming, although at a far bigger markup than growing yourself.
You’ll get more rows later on and the sprinkler after you max the watering can.
The nutrient counter is based on weeds. You can use a nutrient fertilizer to help it.
You get eggs by visiting the farm each day.
The fish farm is really cool but also can be a time sink. Sometimes it’s better to think of the fish farm as just more fish you can catch out the sea than it is to think of it as a way to farm fish. The basic mechanic is if you have two or more fish then they’ll breed and make more fish. It seems the same quality of fish are more likely to make more of that same quality.
It can be a bit of an organizational nightmare to handle the fish farm though. There’s a section for each major area of the game and it can fill up pretty fast. My suggestion is that unless you’re farming a specific fish, don’t feel guilty about sending it all to the restaurant.
There are two slots in the fish farm that are locked and have no use in the game at launch.
The kelp/seaweed farm lets you grow one type of seaweed which comes in about 2 days. There’s no need to tend it, it’ll grow and you can harvest it when it’s ready. The only difference is instead of gold it’s Bei. Bei is a smidge harder to get than gold.
I’d recommend avoiding expanding the seaweed farm too much. You don’t need a ton of seaweed; it is farmable and the Bei can go for weapons instead of seaweed seeds. Unlike vegetables, your sushi doesn’t earn you Bei.
That’s it for the three major farms in Dave the Diver! Remember, you can ignore all three mechanics entirely except for the farm, which you can buy the materials for VIPs instead of farm them if you want to continue to ignore it.
