Guide: Special Ammo Types in The Division 2

During your time with The Division 2, you’re likely to find crates containing special types of ammo for your primary weapons. Not to be confused with specialist ammo, which you’ll start finding after choosing a specialization at level 30, these special ammo types have elemental bonuses that can give you an edge in battle. Here’s everything you need to know.

General Tips

  • Loot every container
    • The game doesn’t give you an indication of what kind of special ammo you’ll receive – you’ll have to search the container and find out.
  • Special ammo containers are explosive
    • As one Reddit user pointed out, special ammo containers can be used to clear a crowd of enemies quickly. It goes without saying that this destroys the ammo box, so consider which course of action would be the most useful.
  • There’s at least one special ammo container in every main mission.
  • You will always receive 30 rounds of special ammo.
  • Equipping a new weapon will get rid of the special ammo – switching already-equipped weapons will not.

Shock Ammo

Shock ammo, as you might’ve guessed, shocks your enemies and freezes them in place for a few seconds. This ammo type is excellent for the Rusher enemy type, stopping them in their tracks at a distance before they get a chance to strike you. It’s also incredibly useful against an enemy that’s throwing a grenade or Molotov, causing them to drop their explosives at their feet. In the Dark Zones, this ammo type is my personal favorite to use against enemy players – as well as the most annoying when it’s used on me.

Incendiary Ammo

This special ammo type ignites enemies, dealing damage over time and causing them to run around in a panic. If an enemy is laying down consistent fire and your team is suppressed, shoot off a few rounds of incendiary ammo to stop them. This ammo type is also great for taking out multiple enemies at once. If there’s a large group of low-level mobs you’re fighting against, spread out your fire and take advantage of the damage-over-time effect of the incendiary ammo.

Explosive Ammo

Explosive ammo – that’s right – explodes on contact, dealing massive damage compared to normal ammo. This ammo type is great for stripping enemy armor quickly, as well as stunning your enemies briefly with the force of the explosion. There’s also a bit of forgiveness when it comes to aiming – as the ammo is explosive, firing at an enemy’s feet can deal splash damage. Keep that in mind for when enemies are behind cover and you can’t get a direct shot in.

High-Velocity Ammo

This type of ammo inflicts bleeding damage, causing damage over time similar to the incendiary ammo. One crucial difference, however, is that this ammo will not stun enemies or cause them to stop firing. Save this ammo for enemies without armor, as it will negate most of the ammo’s benefits. Like incendiary ammo, high-velocity rounds are excellent for dealing high amounts of damage to multiple mobs in a short amount of time.
