The first part of Pathologic 2 just hit stores on Thursday, May 23. That being said, some players are seemingly a bit confused by the unorthodox game. To that end, we have created a quick guide to understanding Pathologic 2 so that you can decide if it is worth your money.
Video game developer Ice-Pick Lodge created Pathologic over a decade ago, with the game having finally hit shelves in 2005. A psychological survival-horror game, Pathologic focuses on the experiences of three characters.
A terrible sickness known as the “sand plague” has stricken a nearby small town and it is up to these three characters to get to the bottom of the spreading plague. The player takes control of each character as they make their way through the 12-day story of survival and discovery. While the game has become a cult classic, it did cause some strife among players at the time.
Developed by a Russian studio, Pathologic first made its way to Russia under the publisher Buka Entertainment. The game was a critical success and was later released in Europe under the publisher G2. While the game earned itself a cult following, a high-quality English translation of the game was quickly in high demand.
In 2015, a new English translation was offered in an updated version of the game titled Pathologic Classic HD on Windows by publisher General Arcade. After making its way to North America, the game was met with mixed reviews. While some players enjoyed the game mechanics and unique atmosphere offered by the title, many players were still frustrated with the English translation of the game.
Consequently, a remake of the game has been in high demand for this cult classic. This is where Pathologic 2 comes into play.
The call for a Pathologic remake eventually reached Ice-Pick Lodge’s ears, as the development team began a Kickstarter campaign in 2014. While the project was initially meant to be a remake of the original game, the creative team eventually decided that the new project offered enough alterations and new ideas to be considered a separate entity. In 2016, backers of the Kickstarter were granted a playable demo of the project titled “Pathologic: The Marble Nest.”
The game itself was eventually named “Pathologic 2” and it was revealed that the game would be released in three different parts. Each part will focus on one of the three main characters within the tile.
An alpha of the game was released in the summer of 2018, earning positive reviews from players. Published by tinyBuild, the first part of Pathologic 2 was released on May 23, 2019. You can check out a trailer for the game down below.
The first part of the game follows the story of Artemy Burakh, also known as Haruspex. Following a dramatic turn of events, Burakh is called away from his medical school in the capital and back to his hometown. Thrown into a violent, plague addled mystery, Burakh is left to pick up the pieces. The game features the same intense and horrifically wonderful atmosphere of the original game, but with a new twist. Of course, this is only the first part of the game.
While the first part of Pathologic 2 was just released, there is still no word as to when the next two parts of the game will be made available. Ice-Pick Lodge has, however, revealed that the next two parts of the game will cover “the Bachelor and the Changeling.”
While the first two portions of the game have no release dates in sight, you can pick up the first part of Pathologic 2 right here.
