How to Choose Your Character in Borderlands 3 – A Beginner’s Guide

When playing with friends, decision making in video games can feel rushed. Choosing a character in Borderlands 3 is no different.

Once you boot up Borderlands 3, you will be met with the toughest decision of the entire game. You must choose a character.

There are four choices, being Amara, FL4K, Moze and Zane. If you are playing with a group, then you may feel short on time when it comes to deciding your vault hunter of choice. If you are playing alone, then it can still be tough to determine which vault hunter is going to bring you the most fun.

But, don’t fret. We’ve got you covered. Check out our quick breakdowns of each vault hunter class down below.

Amara the Siren

Amara is the single siren class for Borderlands 3. Consequently, people that enjoyed playing Maya in Borderlands 2 will likely feel at home with this character.

Amara can pack quite the punch. And, I mean that literally. This vault hunter can summon a giant fist to destroy her enemies. If that is not really your style, Amara can also deal area-of-effect damage with a powerful slam ability or project an astral version of herself to deal damage from afar.

As far as her skill trees are concerned, Amara is all about dealing elemental damage. If you want to boost the potency of your elemental weapons, then this character is for you.

That being said, Amara is also a wonderful support character if you are playing with friends. Her skills can be modified to create a crowd control effect, pulling in and lifting up enemies for your allies to obliterate.

Ultimately, Amara does not quite have enough sustain to be our top choice for single players. However, this siren is a wonderful support character for co-op campaigns.

FL4K the Beastmaster

There have never really been vault hunters quite like FL4K before. And, that’s a good thing.

This vault hunter has a dedicated follower in the form of either a skag, jabber or a spiderant. Beyond that, FL4K can turn himself invisible, send forth a hoard of rakk to destroy his enemies or buff his pet to deal some significant damage.

The hunter’s skill trees are dedicated to dealing critical hit damage and balancing a bevy of temporary buffs and kill bonuses. The real benefit of this vault hunter is the level of sustain it provides single players.

If you are playing on your own, then you are going to need to find a way to draw some of the enemy fire away from you. FL4K is perfect for that.

The vault hunter’s pet will distract enemies extremely well. Beyond that, you can always go invisible and reposition yourself when things get too hairy.

Ultimately, FL4K is perfect for single players. However, the class is not quite a necessity for co-op campaigns.

Moze the Gunner

If you enjoyed playing the Gunzerker in Borderlands 2, then you are going to love Moze in Borderlands 3. It is really as simple as that.

Moze is an outrageous damage dealer. Equipped with a massive mech, this vault hunter can blast enemies with her rail gun, shred opponents with her minigun or even blast off a few rounds from her custom grenade launcher.

Moze’s skill tree kit is all about benefiting her mech. Ultimately, this character is an all-out war machine. If you want to be the center of attention and bring the heat, then this is the character for you.

Better yet, Moze can act as a quasi-tank for her team by releasing her mech and allowing an ally to climb aboard for a moment of respite. Rather you are playing alone or with a group, you can never go wrong by playing Moze.

Zane the Operative

Fans of Borderlands 2’s Zero will likely enjoy playing Zane, though this vault hunter really has an identity all his own.

Zane uniquely has the ability to equip two of his three skills at once. The vault hunter can create a clone of himself to distract enemies, deliver a damage dealing drone or drop a shield barrier to protect himself and his allies.

Zane’s skill trees are pretty diverse, offering you sustain and damage when needed. The real advantage of Zane is his mobility and versatility.

Thanks to his mobility, Zane is an excellent choice for any player looking to play on their own. However, Zane’s shield is a wonderful addition to any co-op group.

Hunter Boyce

Hunter Boyce is a writer, which probably seems pretty obvious with "author" prominently displayed. He mostly writes about video games. However, he was previously a mixed martial arts news writer. When not writing about people pelting each other in the face or about leveling up in the latest RPG, he tends to spend his time as a web producer in Atlanta. You can shout all of your MMA and video game related quandaries at him at @SomthinClever on Twitter. Feel free to make your demands to him in ALL CAPS. He loves that.
