Paradox Interactive’s Imperator: Rome is not messing around. This game is expansive, challenging and not friendly to new players. One of the most important aspects of this new game is loyalty. If you don’t have enough of it throughout your empire, things can turn sour in a flash. But, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered.

What Happens When Loyalty Drops Too Low

Loyalty is a key ingredient to success in Imperator: Rome. If your loyalty meter drops below 33% with you general populace, then you will likely find yourself facing a devastatingly game ending civil war.

If a province drops in loyalty, it may leave your reign and never return. If a prominent leader within your government becomes disloyal, they may raise an army and fight against you. However you want to slice it, a lack of loyalty in Imperator: Rome can be debilitating to your game.

Luckily, there are ways to boost your loyalty score.

How to Boost Your Loyalty

In order to boost your loyalty, you will need to first do a few things. Choose a governor for your populace that is young and free of corruption. They need to have a high level of finesse and zeal. This way, your governor will easily be assimilated.

In order to avoid disloyalty between citizens of various cultures, take advantage of the Cultural Assimilation policy. Your local government policy should also be set to Local Autonomy so that you can decrease the chances of disloyalty and civil war. Beyond that, make sure your subjects are well fed and happy.

When in battle, you can gain loyalty much faster. When a general succeeds in a battle, use your military and religious powers to hold a triumph in that general’s honor. This can be an easy way to increase their popularity and their loyalty.

Giving jobs to your populace can be an easy way to boost loyalty by 20 points at a time. However, you will lose those loyalty points if your citizens ever get sacked.

You will also have to pay a minimum 2% of your state income to scorned families if you wish to keep them from losing loyalty.

In the end, the important thing to remember is balance. Going on the offensive and winning battles can transform your generals into wondrous military leaders, loyal to the last. That being said, too much war exhaustion can easily lead to civil unrest. You also want to ensure plentiful resources for your populace so that they remain happy. That being said, too many expansionistic advances can also lead to civil unrest.

Focus your attention on fully utilizing the Cultural Assimilation policy, as this is one of the easiest ways to boost your loyalty. Other than that, take advantage of successful battles by bolstering your generals. However, do not go out of your way to stake a warpath.

Imperator: Rome is an incredibly complex game. Consequently, the precise steps you will need to take to ensure your populace’s loyalty will change with each scenario. That being said, following these basic rules is a sure way to keep your people happy and loyal to your cause.

Hunter Boyce is a writer, which probably seems pretty obvious with "author" prominently displayed. He mostly writes about video games. However, he was previously a mixed martial arts news writer. When not writing about people pelting each other in the face or about leveling up in the latest RPG, he tends to spend his time as a web producer in Atlanta. You can shout all of your MMA and video game related quandaries at him at @SomthinClever on Twitter. Feel free to make your demands to him in ALL CAPS. He loves that.
