The conclusion of Poppy Playtime: Chapter 4 delivers a whirlwind of plot revelations, emotional conflicts, and teases for the climactic final chapter. Below, we’ll break down the ending step by step, analyzing the key events and what they mean for the story moving forward.
For the key spoilers to the ending:
Chapter Four is a FIVE HOUR game, definitely not trying to hit that refund sweet spot and makes major commitments to its lore. The first half has you dealing with the doctor and getting the generator parts, which results in the Doctor’s demise (who had been the claw hand this entire time) and the introduction of the actual Prototype themselves.
The player fights Doey, the friend for most of the game. Using freezing + saws, they defeat Doey, which ultimately is more of a distraction than the major lore reveal.
One of the most shocking moments in Chapter 4 is the revelation that “Ollie,” the voice guiding Poppy and the player throughout parts of the game, was the Prototype all along. This is uncovered when the Prototype, disguised as Ollie, reveals our location to Poppy and admits to manipulating events to suit his own agenda. Poppy flees, leaving the walkie talkie which explodes. Kissy Missy may or may not have sacrifices herself to save the player.
The explosives planted earlier in the chapter, meant to destroy the foundation of the factory, are intercepted by the Prototype. It uses them to detonate parts of the facility, leaving Safe Haven in ruins and scattering any remaining survivors. These explosives were also used in the walkie talkie, in which Kissy Missy shields the player and then only a arm is left afterward.
After the chaos, the player descends into the deepest part of the factory: the Labs. This final area is introduced with an eerie poppy garden, a location steeped in symbolism and mystery. The player puts a tape in which sets off the alarm, then you get jumpscared by Huggy Wuggy and the game ends.
The Prototype’s obsession with Poppy and its cryptic remarks about their shared nature suggest that it views her as both a threat and a key to its plans. The Prototype’s ultimate goal appears to be maintaining control over the factory and its experiments, ensuring that its own existence—and possibly its dominance—remains unchallenged.
With Chapter 4 setting the stage for the Labs, the Prototype, and a final showdown, all signs point to Chapter 5 being the conclusion of the Poppy Playtime saga. The themes of betrayal, redemption, and survival will likely culminate in a clash between the player, Poppy, and the Prototype, with the fate of the factory—and its inhabitants—hanging in the balance.
Chapter 4’s ending serves as both a dramatic turning point and a setup for the finale. It deepens the lore surrounding Playtime Co., introduces new layers to Poppy and the Prototype’s relationship, and raises the stakes for the player’s mission. With its combination of emotional storytelling and tense gameplay, the chapter leaves us eagerly anticipating the final showdown in Chapter 5.
