Top Tips to Playing Children of Morta – A Beginner’s Guide

Children of Morta is a challenging rogue-lite that is taking Steam by storm. That being said, this game can be tough for new players.

If you want to succeed in Children of Morta, then you are going to have to make the most of your surroundings. You are going to have to learn about the game’s many items, understand the game’s mysterious glowing gates and much more.

Check out the quick tips down below before you get started on your Children of Morta journey.

Children of Morta DLCs

The $1.99 DLC “Paws and Claws” helps a great cause and does make the game a bit easier. Something to consider.

“Ancient Spirits” which MSRPs for $4.99 adds more content.

All versions are 100% Steam Deck compatible.

1. Upgrade Every Chance You Can in Children of Morta

Players like to hoard. It doesn’t matter the game or the genre, players will often pocket every potion and save every trinket. When it comes to Children of Morta, however, you are going to want to spend your gold.

Whenever you take a trip to Berguson’s House, you will be able to upgrade your character by spending gold. Don’t hoard your gold in hopes of finding exquisite items for sale later. Purchase these upgrades every time you can.

2. You Can Take Advantage of the Glowing Gates

During your travels, you will find various glowing gates. These gates are often passageways to rooms of loot and respite. Enemies cannot pass through the gates, creating space for a rather unusual tactic.

Your ranged attacks can pass through the gates and injure any enemy on the other side. Consequently, you can always lure hoards of enemies near the gates and then flee to the other side. From there, it’s open season.

3. Use a Ranged Character

Ranged attacks trump all in Children of Morta. Using melee attacks can leave you exposed, vulnerable to unnecessary damage. Avoid taking additional damage by switching to a ranged character.

When it comes to ranged characters, you have a few options. For starters, Linda is an excellent archer. Lucy, on the other hand, is a fireball casting mage.

It is up to you which ranged character you choose, but Lucy arguably has a better skillset overall.

4. Experiment With Your Runes

Runes are going to be your primary avenue for building your skillset. Like any good rogue-lite, Children of Morta allows you to collect a series of impressive powers as you storm your way across the mountain.

It is important, however, that you experiment with these runes. You can easily find yourself sticking to the same selection of runes as you play. While your selections may be effective, there will always be unique rune combinations that you have yet to try.

Much of Children of Morta is about experimentation. Test out every rune you can find before deciding which ones are worth your time.

5. Flesh Out Every Corner of the Map

It is incredibly important to search every inch of each map your journey takes you on. If you want to be prepared for anything, then you are going to need everything these maps have to offer.

There is perhaps an argument for avoiding unnecessary combat for the sake of minimizing your risks when playing a rouge-lite. That being said, you are going to want to take that risk in Children of Morta so that you can take advantage of every relic, rune and research tablet you can get your hands on.

6. Understand Your Enemies’ Patterns

Each monster type has a distinct attack pattern. Learning these can help you dodge effectively and strike when the enemy is vulnerable.

7. Utilize Family Traits

Each character has unique abilities that can be enhanced as you play. Use the family traits to your advantage by switching characters based on the challenges you face.

8. Bonus Tips

  1. Interact with Family Members:
Regularly speaking with family members can provide insights into their thoughts and feelings, strengthening your connection to the story and sometimes revealing useful information.
  2. Prioritize Workshop Upgrades:
Although not directly related to character stats, upgrading the family workshop can provide overall benefits to your characters, such as improving health or critical hit rates.
  3. Use the Book of Rea Wisely:
The Book of Rea allows you to invest in permanent upgrades. Consider which upgrades will benefit your play style the most and prioritize those to enhance your characters’ abilities.
  4. Monitor the Corruption Meter:
Keep an eye on the corruption levels. As corruption increases, so does the difficulty. Use this knowledge to plan when to take on side quests or when to push through the main story.

If you are always on the lookout for the several nifty items and upgrades this game has to offer, then you will be far more prepared for the title’s many challenging boss fights and other combat sequences.

Hunter Boyce

Hunter Boyce is a writer, which probably seems pretty obvious with "author" prominently displayed. He mostly writes about video games. However, he was previously a mixed martial arts news writer. When not writing about people pelting each other in the face or about leveling up in the latest RPG, he tends to spend his time as a web producer in Atlanta. You can shout all of your MMA and video game related quandaries at him at @SomthinClever on Twitter. Feel free to make your demands to him in ALL CAPS. He loves that.
