Did CD Projekt Red Just Reveal Cyberpunk 2077’s Release Date?

Cyberpunk 2077 has been making waves ever since its official announcement. Made by the same creators as the highly popular Witcher series, the game is set to feature world-class world building and narrative focus. Now it would appear that the development studio behind the upcoming title may have just dropped a hint to when the game will be released.

CD Projekt Red, a development studio from within Poland’s video game publishing titan CD Projekt, is best known for The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The series is famous for its incredibly expansive open-world dynamic, as well as the thoroughly fleshed out world building and world-class writing.

Now, however, the creative team behind the series is working on a new intellectual product. The latest project for the team is Cyberpunk 2077. Much like how The Witcher games are based on a series of novels and short stories of the same title, Cyberpunk 2077 is based on the table-top game Cyberpunk 2020.

A first-person, open-world RPG, the futuristic science fiction adventure of Cyberpunk 2077 is set to offer fans of CD Projekt Red a brand new experience. The game has reportedly been in development by a studio even larger than the one that focused on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. With more resources than ever having reportedly been implemented within the making of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red is seemingly looking to make this game bigger than any of their games ever before.

While the game has been officially announced, an official release date has yet to be revealed. However, a recent Valentine’s Day post from the game’s official Twitter account now has fans curious.

Taking to Twitter, the team stated:

“BREAKING NEWS: Cupid is Back!

“Spotted on February 14th, this bounty hunter is wielding a one-of-a-kind semi-automatic high caliber rifle with a special property of filling holes in people’s hearts. And he might just be having you in his sight…#ValentinesDay”

Within the post, a photo of a sniper named Cupid may be seen. The object of note, however, has become Cupid’s sniper rifle. The gun features a pair of numbers. First on the gun, there is the number 69. While the value could simply be a low-brow reference to the popularized sexual meme, 69 could also be a reference to June 9. June 9 is just days before this year’s E3.

Microsoft featured the official announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 at their E3 conference just last year. Consequently, CD Projekt Red may be planning an announcement around E3 of this year as well. Beyond that, the number 112 may be referring to the game’s release date being Nov. 2, 2019 or even Jan. 12, 2020.

Video game developers have grown increasingly coy, if not even tongue and cheek, with their teases over the years. Consequently, it isn’t totally out of the question that CD Projekt Red may be looking to drum up some bonus hype for their latest title by hiding important information through these mysterious numbers.

Of course, CD Projekt Red has yet to reach out with an official statement on the matter. An official release date for Cyberpunk 2077 has yet to be revealed, leaving many fans to speculate on the recent Valentine’s Day post from the world-class RPG development team.

Hunter Boyce is a writer, which probably seems pretty obvious with "author" prominently displayed. He mostly writes about video games. However, he was previously a mixed martial arts news writer. When not writing about people pelting each other in the face or about leveling up in the latest RPG, he tends to spend his time as a web producer in Atlanta. You can shout all of your MMA and video game related quandaries at him at @SomthinClever on Twitter. Feel free to make your demands to him in ALL CAPS. He loves that.
