Harry Potter: Wizards Unite – What We Know so Far

J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series took over the world long before the collection of hyper-popular films ever released. Following the string of box office breaking movies, Harry Potter evolved into a cultural icon. There is even an entire hub within Universal Studios dedicated to the larger-than-life series. Now, on top of everything else, there is a new mobile game coming to town.

What is Harry Potter: Wizards Unite?

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an upcoming free-to-play mobile game set within the famous world of wizardry. Inspired by the popular Pokemon Go mobile game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is also an augmented reality title.

Players will use their smartphones to battle fantastical beasts from the Harry Potter universe. By traveling through the real world, players will discover new magical creatures to battle and capture. There will also be interesting locations such as fortresses, inns and greenhouses that will each offer useful items, resources and dungeon raids to players. There will also be a storyline within the game, allowing players the ability to investigate the Calamity.

The game is being published by Niantic and being developed in tandem by WB Games San Francisco and Niantic. You can check out the official teaser trailer for the game within the video provided above.

When is Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Being Released?

An official release date has yet to be revealed. However, Niantic has come forward to claim that the game will be released sometime within 2019. As reported by imore.com, there is speculation that the game will release May 30, the same day that EE will be releasing its 5G network within the United Kingdom. EE has claimed to have an exclusivity deal of some sort with Niantic concerning future content within the game. That being said, this is only speculation. With an actual release date having not been provided, players will simply have to patiently wait for more information about the interesting title.

In the meantime, check out an exciting hype trailer for the game up above.

The Game Is Already in Beta and Already Has Its First Major Event on the Way

If you live in New Zealand or Australia, then you are in luck. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is currently in a region locked beta. If you live in either of the previously mentioned regions, then you can start playing the game’s beta right now. All you will need to do is go to Google Play or the App Store and download the game. The rest of the mobile gaming community, however, will have to wait.

For the players that have access to the beta, you each have something to look forward to. Niantic has revealed that the special event known as the Brilliant Event: Fantastic Flora and Fauna will soon become active. A countdown timer seems to suggest that the event will begin on May 30, the same day that EE will be releasing its 5G network in the UK.

Unfortunately, little is known about the upcoming event other than its name. Beta testers will simply have to wait and see what this event has in store for them. You can check out some gameplay from the Harry Potter: Wizards Unite beta within the video up above.

Hunter Boyce

Hunter Boyce is a writer, which probably seems pretty obvious with "author" prominently displayed. He mostly writes about video games. However, he was previously a mixed martial arts news writer. When not writing about people pelting each other in the face or about leveling up in the latest RPG, he tends to spend his time as a web producer in Atlanta. You can shout all of your MMA and video game related quandaries at him at @SomthinClever on Twitter. Feel free to make your demands to him in ALL CAPS. He loves that.
