Pokémon: Detective Pikachu

When I first heard of the concept of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu I didn’t know what to think. The title says it all. There is a Pikachu in a world full of pokémon who happens to be a detective… and he talks. Based off of the 3DS game, a boy has to track down his missing detective father with the help of his partner, Detective Pikachu. To make matters even more interesting, the boy can somehow understand what the Pikachu is saying. It is an interesting take for sure. Then I saw the trailer, and I have to say, it piqued my interest.

Never in a million years would I expect to recognize the voice of a Pikachu. But when I heard Detective Pikachu speak, I immediately knew who it was. There was no doubt in my mind the hilarious, handsome Ryan Reynolds is the voice of Pikachu. I thought it was hysterical and a great choice. 50 gold stars to whoever convinced him to do that part. That is a genius move. Now I have to see this movie at some point, no matter how strange it might be.

Ryan Reynolds is an actor who I will watch anything he is in. He brings himself to every role he plays and he manages to convey his sense of humor in all of his work. Reynolds is great to watch. I am convinced there is no one else on this planet who could play Deadpool, and it took him years upon years to get that first movie made. At this point in his career, Reynolds can do whatever project he wants. I believe if he chose to do this project, there was something in himself that thought this is going to be a solid film. He doesn’t seem like the sellout type to me. This Detective Pikachu character is most likely going to be one funny Pokémon who the audience will enjoy from start to finish.

Another thing that I am excited about with this film is seeing what all of these Pokémon look like in real life. This idea is something I have always thought about since I first played the Pokémon games as a child. How would Charizard look? How about Squirtle or Bulbasaur? We finally get to find out. I have to say though, Mr. Mime looks pretty creepy from what I’ve seen in the trailer, much like mimes in real life! If anything, I would like to see this movie simply for the fact that I can see what it would be like if Pokémon were to exist in our real world. My inner child-like imagination will finally get to know. That is satisfying enough.

Now honestly I don’t plan on seeing this movie in theaters. I just cannot see myself justifying paying the ticket price to see this movie, I just can’t. I don’t know if I will even pay for it to rent it or watch it on demand. However, if I come across it on a tv channel some day, I’ll definitely give it a chance. I’ll test it out for my loyalty to Ryan Reynolds and the fact that I can finally see these pocket monsters come to life.
