Katamari Reroll Review

Katamari Damacy is a unique puzzle game that involves you taking a ball and rolling it through anywhere from on top of a table all the way to the world itself and in later renditions, the universe itself. The ball, as it grows, can pick up bigger items, which causes an interesting snowball effect – the bigger the ball, the faster the size of it can increase. That’s it. That is all there is to it.

There are a total of five console games:

  • Katamari Damacy (also Katamari Reroll)
  • We Love Katamari (PS2)
  • Me and My Katamari (PSP)
  • Beautiful Katamari (Xbox 360) (25th best selling Xbox 360 game in Japan)
  • Katamari Forever (PS3) (compilation game)

There were a few mobile games as well but the only thing currently out is Amazing Katamari which is an infinite runner. Touch My Katamari, for the vita, could technically be included in the list but it was really bad.

Katamari games work as noted. There is nothing much deep to the gameplay – each level is the same. Roll a ball around, make it larger, gain more stuff and access to more areas and reach whatever the goal is. It’s a lot of fun and you should play at least one Katamari Damacy game in your life.

Katamari Reroll is a HD remake of the first game. Works with widescreen TVs, a few time adjustments to make a few levels easier and that’s it. No autosave, same levels, same as if you popped the PS2 game in your PC and went at it.

So if everyone should play at least one, is this the game to play? So the answer is really complicated because Katamari Forever is basically all of the previous Katamari games in one. It has a sampling of the levels from the previous games, a couple of new levels and awesome remixed music along with HD graphics. The issue? PS3 exclusive AND while available on PS Now, so you can play on PC, you have to have a PS Now subscription to play it.

That leaves Katamari Reroll and the endless runner phone game as the only two ways to play a Katamari game on modern hardware. So if you’ve never played Katamari before, Reroll is worth a pickup especially when it’s on sale. It’s the original game, with HD graphics.

However, if you have PS3 or a PS Now subscription, Katamari Forever is superior. Reroll is short. Less than 5 or 10 hours of content for sure. There is some eternal modes, but not nearly the content Forever has. It’s still good though and you’ll be content when you’re done with the game.

If you’re a huge Katamari fan you could probably skip this. It’s the same as the first one. A good stroll down memory lane and wonderful on Switch as a portable something to do that you can engage and disengage with, but it’s not anything new.
